I still have some paintings that I completed last year that I never got around to posting. I can’t wait to start painting more. I really haven’t done much at all this year.

I’m still having lighting problems, so the colors are slightly off.

Guide Book Journal?

A while ago I came across this cool book thingy that my uncle gave me a few years back. It’s called the New Beauty Advisor Guide Book by Estée Lauder. He made the book at his job and thought I would like it because it has a lot of information about skincare, fragrances, makeup, etc. I actually don’t care about most of the stuff in the book, but since I don’t know who to give it to and I don’t want to throw it away, I’m thinking of turning it into an art journal. It has pretty good binding and a few sturdy pages. I plan to use some of the other pages in my mixed media paintings. I’ll update on that later if it turns out good!

As a little Christmas/birthday (January 16) gift to myself, I decided to buy a few things from Blick Art for the art classes that I’m taking. That website is an artist’s dream, but unless you have a lot of money to spend on there it really drives you nuts. Since I recently got laid off from my job, and my mom has been off from hers as well, spending a lot of money on a hobby just isn’t an option right now. I did manage to buy a few things that I absolutely needed. I’ll just have to be resourceful as well.

I always have this inner battle when it comes to doing art. Part of me feels that I shouldn’t waste money buying art supplies unless I can make some money back selling prints, commissions or the like. And then the other part of me feels that if I don’t invest in myself, how will I ever get good enough to make money off art.

Sometimes I hate being an adult. I miss the days when I could run to my mom and she would buy me what I wanted. Now I have the responsibility of taking care of myself as well as my mom. Oh, I was going to post some new artwork but the big light in my room blew and I’m using one of those “green” bulbs that are only like 60 watts! So yeah, everything looks dark and weird right now.

If you’ve been following me for a while then you know that I try to draw Aaliyah every January in honor of our birthday (January 16), but this year I just didn’t feel up to it. My new year has gotten off to a really bad start and the last thing I really want to do is celebrate my birthday. At any rate, I wanted to share the last Aaliyah image I made. It was done on 1/15/2010. My prayers are with her loved ones. Hopefully my birthday will actually turn out good.

And most importantly… Thank you, Dr. King!!

Almost didn’t want to share this one since it’s so UGLY, but I figure it’s part of the progression. I wanted to do her face over so bad, but I still haven’t gotten to that point where I can paint over something. I’ve only done that once and I still regret it!

Watercolor Paper Tryout

My aunt gifted me this 5 x 7 watercolor paper pad by Royal & Langnickel that she caught on sale for dirt cheap. I used it to sketch a few things a couple months ago, but I was so nervous about painting the sketches with my acrylics since the paper is only 96 lbs. Luckily, it seems to be holding up well with pretty much no warping or bleeding. So far I’m definitely pleased with this paper and would purchase it myself. Although I think I’d go for 140 lbs, of course. I’ll post the finished painting when it’s ready.
